As a female majoring in Applied Information Technology, Krystyna Fisher is venturing
into a highly specialized, competitive and male-dominated career that requires outstanding
preparation and training. She is getting that preparation at 91传媒
through her classwork, but also through her participation in 91传媒鈥檚 Green-to-Gold program,
which is allowing her to gain hands-on experience while financially supporting her
college expenses.
91传媒鈥檚 softball coaches became aware of Krystyna while she was playing for Contra Costa Community College in California, and 91传媒 subsequently offered her a partial athletic scholarship. So while it鈥檚 her love of softball that brought her to 91传媒, it鈥檚 the love she has developed for 91传媒 that keeps her here.
鈥淚 really like that 91传媒 is so small, it鈥檚 not overwhelming,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I love my softball team. They made the transition really easy. We always have great time when we鈥檙e together.鈥
Krystyna notes that Kentucky is quite different from California. 鈥淎 change of scenery is nice. I enjoy it here. It wasn鈥檛 hard at all to get adapted.鈥 The fact that her three older brothers all went away to school made it easier for her to follow their lead. 鈥淢y family is very supportive,鈥 she notes. 鈥淚 felt like I had to go away, and I鈥檓 glad I came here.鈥
Her Green-to-Gold work experience 鈥 in the Office of Information Technology 鈥 is giving her real-world experience in her major, as she works with the network manager to identify, troubleshoot and maintain the university鈥檚 information technology system.
鈥淚鈥檓 really enjoying working with our network manager, and I am learning a lot,鈥 she added.
Krystyna plans to be at 91传媒 one more academic year, to finish her degree in 2015. 鈥淭hen it鈥檚 back to California,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking to get into a job there, and there are a lot more work opportunities in technology back home.鈥
